Player Pick Pool: Week 18
If nobody's going to challenge him, we might as well just give comedian Mike Schmidt the Player Pick Pool trophy right now. (Note: there is no trophy.)
Once again, Schmidt extended his lead in Week 17, getting 18 points from Hideki Matsui, while second-place SportsJudge got 14 from Manny Ramirez.
Perhaps the biggest surprise of the week was that while Alex Rodriguez didn't homer all week, he still got me 18 points, the Yankees didn't fall apart and I somehow closed back within five points of Daily News deputy Sunday sports editor Eric Barrow for third place - Barrow's pick, Ryan Howard, got only seven points, making the 10 points that Howard got for me in Week 2 seem like a positive contribution.
Meanwhile, I'm surprised that Deadspin editor Will Leitch is still willing to be involved in the Player Pick Pool after a three-point week from his beloved Rick Ankiel. He's now 53 points behind me, and clearly living up to his promise from earlier in the season to finish last.
On to the Week 18 selections:
Schmidt (331 points): "Seven games at home should see Vladimir Guerrero (OF, Angels) padding my lead... that is, as long as I'm the only guy who takes him (everyone else has). By the way, took Ankiel in my NL fantasy league this past week... thanks a lot, Leitch."
SportsJudge (308 points): Ichiro Suzuki, OF, Mariners - "The guy can just flat out hit, and he won't even have to face Johan Santana this week in the Metrodome."
Barrow (292 points): Moises Alou, OF, Mets
Spector (287 points): Lance Berkman, 1B, Astros - Seven games against the Nationals and Pirates should boost that astounding .238 home average.
Leitch (234 points): "Gimme... hmm ... let's think Derrek Lee (1B, Cubs). Stupid Cubs."
TRIVIA TIME
Today's question: Yesterday, I wrote about late-season pennant rallies. Who was the last team to fit the opposite profile, winning on Opening Day and staying in first place from wire-to-wire?
Friday's question: Which two pitchers gave up the hits to Ron Mahay in his lone career multi-hit game?
Answer: Bud Black and Julian Tavarez
