U.S. Attorney Refutes L.A. Times Story

If the Jason Grimsley affair was a storm for Major League Baseball, it's chaos now. The U.S. Attorney's office in San Francisco said yesterday that a blockbuster Los Angeles Times story naming five players in the infamous Grimsley affidavit, "these reports contain significant inaccuracies." What those innacuracies were, they wouldn't say, but the clear implication from U.S. Attorney Kevin Ryan is that the issue was with the names listed in the story. Officials declined to say how many names or which names might be inaccurate. Roger Clemens, Andy Pettitte, Miguel Tejada, Brian Roberts and Jay Gibbons were listed in the story as players Grimsley named during an interview with federal agents. The names were redacted from a search warrant affidavit filed in June, after IRS and FBI agents raided Grimsley's home to search for possible evidence of trafficking human growth hormone. The Daily News also reported that a law enforcement source had told the paper that Roger Clemens was one of the names, but The News was not able to confirm that information. The News also wrote that the paper had been cautioned by another law enforcement source close to the case that the names might not be included in the affidavit. L.A. Times sports editor Randy Harvey, reached by The News today, said that unless the paper is informed of the "significant errors they claim we made, we have no comment, except to say we stand by our story." - Michael O'Keeffe and T.J.
